The \u2018kalabaws\u2019 were painted with pink roses and the words \u2018LENI-KIKO 2022\u2019 as their owners joined the \u2018Pink Eruption Rally\u2019 to support the presidential candidate Vice Pres. Leni Robredo and aspiring vice president Sen. Kiko Pangilinan.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fweb.facebook.com%2Fbuing.org%2Fposts%2F725209885502256&#038;show_text=true&#038;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"575\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While other netizens appreciated the artwork plastered on the carabao\u2019s skin, many expressed their concerns regarding the animal\u2019s health and welfare.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/syndicated.pageonemedia.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/20220425-PAGEONE-Pink-Carabao-comment-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"281\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-176840\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/syndicated.pageonemedia.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/20220425-PAGEONE-Pink-Carabao-comment-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"589\" height=\"168\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-176841\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Social media users from Twitter tagged PETA Asia (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) to raise their issues.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/syndicated.pageonemedia.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/20220425-PAGEONE-Pink-Carabao-comment-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"604\" height=\"692\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-176842\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although part of the festival celebration, many raised their eyebrows regarding its political agenda while others said it\u2019s the choice of the carabaos\u2019 owners that matter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/syndicated.pageonemedia.ph\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/20220425-PAGEONE-Pink-Carabao-comment-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"592\" height=\"266\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-176843\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Moving aside from the political statement of the art involved, carabao painting has always been a part of the cultural events in the Philippines. In Vigan, as part of their celebration of \u2018Karbo Festival\u2019, people paint artworks on carabaos&#8217; bodies as a way of honoring the \u2018beasts of burden.\u2019 <\/p>\n<p>This begs the question, is painting on animal skin cruelty-free?<\/p>\n<p>In the case of horses, Kate Cavanagh\u2013a registered veterinary surgeon in the UK\u2013shared that as long as ponies are \u201cnot showing any signs of distress and the paint is non-toxic,\u201d the idea alone does not raise a welfare issue.<\/p>\n<p>Vets are more concerned regarding the general well-being of the animals during animal-painting parties or social activities. While many horses enjoy human interaction, not all animals share the same temperament.<\/p>\n<p>The British Equine Veterinary Association reminds caretakers to make sure the horses and ponies are well-fed and hydrated, with enough rest periods the whole time. The same approach can be applied to animals participating in human activities.<\/p>\n<p>Strictly speaking, animal painting can be considered safe\u2013provided that artists use water-based and non-toxic paints free of heavy metals. In the case of smaller pets, dogs\u2019 and cats\u2019 skin may feel irritated when they handle water-based paints, but poisoning and toxic effects are unlikely to happen unless directly ingested. <\/p>\n<p>Dubbed as the national animal of the Philippines, carabaos represent Filipinos&#8217; hard work and perseverance. They are considered as Filipino farmers\u2019 loyal companions and are often part of cultural celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>What can you say about the pink carabao?
