\u201cBorn and raised in Laguna, Philippines, I had a fun and simple childhood. With both of my parents being educators, I grew up in an academic environment where my life revolved around school, church, and spending time with family and friends… It was a simple life, and I continue to treasure that simplicity to this day,\u201d she shared.<\/p>\n
There were no childhood visions of crowns or sashes for young Ariella. In fact, when the country watched Miriam Quiambao claim the first runner-up title in Miss Universe 1999, the ten-year-old Ariella admired her, but didn\u2019t imagine herself taking the same path. \u201cPerhaps because I was more immersed in the academic world, the idea of joining pageants felt distant and unrealistic. Instead, I focused on more tangible goals, completing my studies, earning my diploma, and securing a job.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her dreams were firmly rooted in the sciences. Inspired by her early environment, she envisioned herself donning a white coat, not a gown. \u201cAs I mentioned earlier, being in an academic environment when I was young, I aspired to become a doctor… Eventually, this passion led me to pursue and complete a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry at the University of the Philippines Los Ba\u00f1os (UPLB).\u201d<\/p>\n
But fate had other plans. One quiet afternoon in a coffee shop in San Pablo, a chance encounter altered the course of her life. \u201cOne day, while at a coffee shop in San Pablo, Laguna, a local fashion designer named Noli Pilapil approached me and encouraged me to join a beauty pageant. That unexpected encounter was the first time the idea of pageantry began to take root in my mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, even as compliments about her looks came and she was chosen as muse for her varsity volleyball team, the world of beauty queens remained foreign territory. \u201cMy world was centered around academics and sports.\u201d Yet the elegance and confidence of iconic women she admired\u2014\u201cQueen Elizabeth II, Kate Middleton, Angelina Jolie, and Olivia Palermo\u201d\u2014started influencing her fashion sense and understanding of beauty.<\/p>\n
Her path to pageantry was anything but linear. After initially being denied permission to join Binibining Laguna during her final semester of college, she thought the moment had passed. But fate knocked twice. \u201cRight after graduation, the same designer, Tito Noli Pilapil, reached out again to ask if I was still interested. This time, my parents gave me their approval. I ended up joining the pageant and became a semi-finalist.\u201d<\/p>\n
Then came a plot twist worthy of a film. \u201cMy gay friend encouraged me to try a national pageant… Little did I know, he had already submitted my application for Miss Earth Philippines.\u201d While she didn\u2019t place, that foray opened the doors to a community that saw in her the potential for greater heights.<\/p>\n
Yet Ariella remained grounded in her career as a food specialist in R&D. She held back\u2014until the sign she had been waiting for finally came. \u201cEventually, I made a deal with myself, if Jonas Gaffud personally reached out to me, then that would be my sign to go for it.\u201d It happened. \u201cThen one day, out of nowhere, his name popped up in my Messenger… It felt surreal. I couldn\u2019t say no because I had literally prayed for that exact sign.\u201d<\/p>\n
Still, tradition and respect for family remained strong. \u201cBefore anything else, I still had to ask my parents for permission… It was actually my sister who convinced them to let me join, reminding them that I was already turning 24… and the age limit was 25. Eventually, they said yes.\u201d<\/p>\n
